Zumba is a popular fitness craze based on high intensity cardiovascular dance workouts to irresistible latin rhythms. History of Zumba

Zumba was devised by fitness instructor Alberto “Beto” Perez during the mid 90’s in his native Cali, Colombia. As he arrived at his class, he realised that he had forgotten his aerobic music tape. He remembered he had some latin mix tapes with salsa and merengue music and decided to improvise. He put the tapes on and the response was electric. The infectious latin rhythms energized the room. He led the class in a dance based workout, synchronizing their moves to the slinky beats. His students loved it and Zumba was born.

In 2001 Beto moved to Miami, Florida and teamed up with his friends Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion. The three Albertos launched the Zumba brand. They pressed some DVDs as their calling card, and introduced a Zumba Academy to train certified Zumba instructors. Today Zumba is taught at gyms throughout the world

Whilst staying faithful to its Latin roots, a Zumba class can also feature flamenco, hip hop and Bhangra in its soundtrack.

A typical Zumba class will mix in songs with different tempos. So you will be dancing flat out for one song, taking it easy for another song before going flat out again. This means the class follows the principles of High Intensity Interval Training [HIIT], which has been shown to be the most effective method of exercise for fat loss.

Zumba is great for  those of you who love to party whilst losing weight. The classes are great fun, the music is infectious and you will not even notice how hard you are working.
