My Journey in Nursing: From Exhaustion to Equilibrium and Renewed Passion

When I embarked on my nursing career, I envisioned a life committed to comfort, compassion, and care. I imagined being a steadfast presence at a patient’s side during their most challenging moments, providing solace through both actions and empathy. Now, after several years, I recognize that this vision was merely the beginning of what would evolve into a life-altering journey filled with essential lessons about resilience, growth, and self-awareness.

How It All Started

My path into healthcare began in 2009 when I became a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in a nursing facility. It was physically taxing work, yet even during the toughest shifts, I discovered immense joy in aiding others. Observing the vulnerability of my patients and being part of their care team solidified my ambition to expand my influence.

By 2013, I had completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and eagerly stepped into my position as a registered nurse (RN) on a busy medical-surgical unit. It felt like the realization of my dreams—being at the center of care, where lives were touched daily. However, no amount of training could adequately prepare me for the storm that was about to ensue.

The Wake-Up Call: Nursing at Full Throttle

Being an RN on a MedSurg floor was both thrilling and draining in equal parts. Each 12-hour shift became a test of endurance, filled with administering medications, updating providers, responding to crises, managing paperwork, and attending to a multitude of patient needs. The pace allowed little room for breaks, much less meaningful patient interactions—the very experiences that initially drew me to nursing.

While I stayed dedicated to patient care, the emotional and physical demands of this unyielding workflow began to take their toll. I frequently felt exhausted and longed for the deep connections I once valued. I understood it was time for a change.

Acknowledging Burnout and the Need for Change

By 2015, burnout gradually infiltrated my life. I started to feel emotionally disconnected—from my work, from family and friends, and even from myself. During an infrequent lunch break, I came across an article discussing “compassion fatigue in healthcare providers.” Every symptom outlined resonated with my reality. That moment marked a pivotal shift. I admitted to myself that I was experiencing burnout, and it required prompt action.

Making a Change: Emphasizing Self-Care and Boundaries

I still held a deep love for healthcare but recognized the need to reevaluate my approach. I initiated a gradual transformation centered on three key areas:

1. Prioritizing Self-Care
I made my health a top priority. This included ensuring proper nutrition during shifts, staying hydrated, incorporating regular exercise, and—most critically—allowing myself to rest between demanding days.

2. Establishing Boundaries
Learning to say “no” became vital. I limited overtime, distanced myself from negative influences, and carved out time for my personal life. I realized boundaries were not obstacles; they were pathways to sustainability.

3. Reconnecting Through Purpose
To regain significance in my work, I intentionally created small yet meaningful interactions with patients. These brief conversations and shared smiles reminded me of why I chose nursing in the first place.

A New Chapter: Becoming a Nurse Practitioner

In 2020, I obtained my nurse practitioner (NP) degree and entered the primary care field. This coincided with the global pandemic, which tested every aspect of our healthcare system. Many of my colleagues were overwhelmed, struggling with disrupted work-life balance and mounting pressures.

Instead of feeling immobilized by the situation, I found a renewed purpose: to be part of the solution—not only by caring for patients but also by assisting healthcare providers in rediscovering their passion for the profession.

Giving Back: Supporting Fellow Clinicians

Witnessing others endure the same challenges I had once faced motivated me to take action. I began developing tools, resources, and support networks to assist nurse practitioners and clinicians. My mission became clear: to help others steer clear of burnout, reclaim their time, and rejuvenate their joy in practicing medicine.

I started teaching strategies such as:

– Minimizing documentation burdens through workflow optimization.
– Utilizing AI medical tools like Freed, an AI scribe, to conserve hours on paperwork.
– Implementing boundary-setting techniques to protect personal time.
– Fostering a resilient mindset through mindfulness and self-improvement practices.

While I can’t transform the healthcare system overnight, I believe we can empower providers to improve their daily experiences—and that starts with small, focused changes.

Reflecting on the Journey

Every stage of my journey—CNA, bedside RN, burnout survivor, and now NP—has shaped the person and professional I am today. The obstacles compelled me to become stronger, more self-aware, and deeply empathetic, not just to patients but also to fellow healthcare professionals.
