The likely response is “no.” However, as a family medicine doctor, I have started to recognize the significance of play in various dimensions of our health. Playfulness includes features like curiosity, spontaneity, and the liberty to suspend reality. Reflect on how these elements might influence your well-being.
In times of uncertainty, play functions as a stabilizing force that also frees us to relax and relish life, much like spinning on a playground during childhood. Historically, the term play originates from Old English and Middle Dutch words that embody the notions of exercise and joy. The National Institute for Play defines it as a mentality of enjoyment and a temporary break from time limitations.
Sadly, as we mature, we are frequently dissuaded from play. Yet, play continues to offer advantages for adults by boosting moods, nurturing social bonds, and alleviating stress. Importantly, play also has a favorable impact on cardiovascular health.
**Continue Playing.** Keep your current playful pursuits alive and add more playful elements. In sports, for example, prioritize enjoyment over competition at times.
**Discover Fresh Ways to Play.** Welcome new challenges and experiences, reflecting how children tackle unfamiliar games.
**Reintroduce Play into Your Life.** Begin by reminiscing about your childhood play experiences and investigate the reasons behind your cessation. This reflection can be a pathway to reintroducing play.
**Establish Play Objectives.** Incorporate enjoyable and playful goals into your future health and wellness plans. Ensure they are both delightful and distinctly yours.
