Celebrating Women’s History Month at Woodland Terrace: Honoring Heritage, Inspiring Tomorrow

By Alissa Sauer | March 6, 2025

For Woodland Terrace, March signifies much more than a mere month on the calendar; it serves as an affectionate homage to the remarkable contributions women have made throughout history. In recognition of Women’s History Month, we are excited to present a month-long lineup of events that highlight pioneering women in history, culture, and the arts. With thoughtful programming—from expert lectures to live musical acts—Woodland Terrace extends an invitation to residents, families, and community members to celebrate the bravery, innovation, and strength of women globally.

Celebrating Women’s Achievements Through Interactive Experiences

The Women’s History Month observance at Woodland Terrace is crafted to entertain, inform, and inspire. Our programming pays tribute to significant women whose narratives continue to influence our society. This year’s events comprise:

March 3: “America’s Sweetheart” – Mary Pickford
Step back into the illustrious era of silent cinema to uncover the story of Mary Pickford. She wasn’t just one of the most beloved actresses of her time; she was also a groundbreaking businesswoman and co-founder of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Residents will discover her pivotal role in early Hollywood and her enduring impact on the film industry.

March 13: Women in Music – Hosted by Dr. David Lee Joyner
Join the esteemed jazz musician and educator Dr. David Lee Joyner for an enriching musical expedition that celebrates the creativity and resilience of women in music. From underappreciated composers to legendary performers who transformed their genres, this session will emphasize the women whose tunes have resonated through the ages, often overcoming tremendous challenges.

March 13: Art Lecture with the Frye Museum
This day will also include a special art lecture in collaboration with the Frye Museum. Residents will explore the legacy of a renowned ballerina whose influence still echoes in contemporary dance. The session will examine how she shattered barriers in a predominantly male art form and empowered countless dancers to follow in her footsteps.

March 14: Feminist Movements in U.S. History
Yasmine Gomez from the University of Washington’s Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies will facilitate an engaging conversation that delves into pivotal milestones of feminist history. Covering topics from voting rights to workplace equality, residents will gain insight into how grassroots initiatives and courageous leadership have reshaped the American landscape for women today.

The Importance of Personal Reflection

Women’s History Month also encourages valuable intergenerational dialogue. At Woodland Terrace, reflection is an essential component of our celebration. Our residents expressed heartfelt sentiments on society’s progress and the journey that lies ahead:

“I believe women today have more opportunities than we did before, particularly in the workforce. I am so proud of my daughter—she is the CEO of a major company.” – Bettie B.

“When I was employed, managing sick days, vacation, and family time was much more difficult. Being a working woman, they really didn’t support family life. I’m thrilled to see that things have changed for the better.” – Barbara H.

“Reflecting on history, I appreciate all the amazing women we admire for their contributions, from Amelia Earhart to Ruth Bader Ginsburg.” – Carol X.

These reflections highlight the significance of recognizing lived experiences alongside historical achievements, reminding us that advancement is both personal and communal.
