Larry is a Companion: A Story of Triumph Over Challenges
In the center of a charming town surrounded by expansive agricultural land, Larry, a neighbor residing a few miles from our forty-eight-acre hobby farm, has evolved into more than merely a companion. Our connection initiated when Larry, together with his wife, set up a fire and security system in our new residence. This installation ignited a friendship that flourished through escapades in RVing, coaching youth soccer, and creating shared family memories at county fairs.
In addition to our personal experiences, Larry’s tenacity became especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. A fortnight after Thanksgiving 2020, Larry fought for his life in our hospital’s emergency room, suffering from severe symptoms of COVID-19. There, I observed the indispensable contributions of respiratory therapists, who played a crucial role in Larry’s recovery. These therapists provided essential care, helped him avoid intubation, and offered him a chance to survive against tremendous odds.
Larry’s resolve, coupled with the steadfast support of his healthcare team, enabled him to surpass expectations. Despite the arduous battle, Larry was discharged in late December 2020 and gradually regained his health. By the time of my son’s high school graduation party, Larry had successfully transitioned off home oxygen, symbolizing hope and perseverance.
As we approach Respiratory Care Week, it is a time to honor the often-invisible heroes—respiratory therapists—who make significant contributions in healthcare environments. Their knowledge, composure in emergencies, and commitment were crucial for patients like Larry. Today, my appreciation extends to these professionals, who tirelessly work to ensure patients like Larry have a chance to fight.
Larry’s journey is more than a personal tale; it stands as a testament to friendship, the strength of community, and the vital work of healthcare providers who go above and beyond their responsibilities to save lives.
