**A Journey of Honor: Honoring Veterans at MacKenzie Place – Colorado Springs**

At MacKenzie Place – Colorado Springs, wellness involves more than merely being active; it means living with intention, appreciation, and connection. Through our PrimeFit Wellness™ initiative, we assist residents in seeking significance and energy at every phase of life. This fall, three residents, Vern Swim, Shirley Swim, and James Butts, discovered that purpose while participating in Honor Flight of Southern Colorado’s Mission 21, joining 55 fellow veterans on a memorable journey to Washington, D.C.

**Honor Flight: A Salute to Veterans**

The Honor Flight program provides all-expenses-paid excursions for veterans to visit national monuments dedicated to their honor. On October 2, 58 veterans, encompassing 51 from the Vietnam War, six from the Korean War, and one from World War II, departed from Colorado Springs for a three-day expedition of remembrance and contemplation. Among them were Vern and Shirley Swim, both Army veterans, and James Butts, a Korean War veteran. Vern served as an Army Chaplain for 24 years, while Shirley was an Army Nurse during wartime, exemplifying the courage and vital roles of women in military service.

**Thoughts on Honor**

Upon their return, Vern reflected on the journey, describing it as “the most interesting, informative, and emotional trip we have ever experienced.” For Vern and others, visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial held profound significance. He located the name of a dear friend lost in Vietnam, noting that “there were few who didn’t shed some tears.” The journey included stops at the World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Vietnam Wall, with Vern highlighting a remarkable 99-year-old World War II veteran who could still walk with only a walking stick.

The essence of the experience was honor. “Those who came back from Vietnam received no honor,” Vern reflected. Each veteran was presented with a hat adorned with pins stating, “It’s never too late. Welcome home!” and “Your service. Our Freedom!” symbolizing the long-overdue respect and recognition.

**An Unforgettable Sendoff and Return**

The Honor Flight commenced with a moving sendoff with streets filled with spectators and American flags. Children encouraged them, stirring emotions and pride. Accompanied by a police escort from Colorado Springs to Denver, the veterans experienced gratitude many never received upon their return from service. They came back with a “Mail Call,” receiving letters from family, friends, and community members, a treasured tradition from their military days.

**Embodying PrimeFit Wellness™**

At MacKenzie Place, we honor Vern, Shirley, and James, as well as all who have served. Their journey reflects our PrimeFit Wellness™ philosophy: living with strength, gratitude, and community. “It’s a three-day, all-expense-paid adventure,” Vern remarked. “The program operates as a nonprofit and 100% volunteer-driven, supported by donations. I urge all veterans to apply for this program. Sign up and be HONORED.” Veterans or their relatives can find more information at honorflightsoco.net.
