Title: Unveiling the Life of a Female Physician Behind the White Coat
By Damane Zehra, Radiation Oncology Resident, Pakistan
The field of medicine is a vocation that requires not only expertise and intellect but also immense dedication—and for women in this profession, that dedication frequently transcends mere career obligations. While patients and peers may perceive the serene and poised doctor in her white coat, beneath that exterior exists a reality filled with restless nights, societal pressures, personal turmoil, and emotional burdens that often remain unnoticed and undervalued.
This piece provides a glimpse into a single day in the life of a young female physician, illustrating the emotional, mental, and professional balancing act she must perform. It is a poignant narrative of a resident oncologist navigating the challenges of a role far from her home, her personal goals, family responsibilities, and the cultural demands placed on women in the medical field.
A Role Secured, Yet Opportunities Overlooked
After enduring several months of unemployment, this physician ultimately landed a position at a hospital situated far from her residence. Ironically, just as she began to acclimate to her new job, interview invitations and test notifications began to arrive in a consistent flow—opportunities that had previously been scarce during her job search now appeared plentiful. Bound by her new obligations and the anxiety of jeopardizing her standing during the probationary phase, she unwillingly declined most offers—save for one.
Resolute not to overlook what she considered a pivotal career opportunity, she decided to take a rare day off to pursue a certification examination. The sacrifices commenced right away—insufficient sleep, skipping breakfast, and interruptions in her travel plans due to taxi complications—each contributing to the stress of the examination day.
A Challenging Examination
Upon her arrival, she faced additional hurdles: a delayed start to the exam due to technological issues, a noisy, overcrowded auditorium, and fellow candidates who were preoccupied with discussions about salaries, career progress, and societal demands. Despite feelings of hunger and exhaustion, she soldiered on and completed a three-to-four hour test, emerging both physically and emotionally depleted.
Reconnecting with Old Friends
Following the examination, an unexpected reunion with her best friend from medical school provided a comforting yet complicated diversion. Her friend—a thriving radiologist, spouse, and mother—was grappling with anxiety, societal pressure, parenting challenges, and self-doubt. Their lunch evolved into a therapeutic session, uncovering how societal norms stifle women regardless of their achievements.
Returning to Reality
Even with the taxing afternoon behind her, there would be no respite. She received a message from HR regarding her absence inducing disruptions at work. With no one available to fill her oncology shift, she recognized that her patients may have suffered. The guilt overwhelmed her—this hadn’t been a day off for enjoyment, yet she found herself filled with apologies.
The day was still not over. She managed to fit in two more errands, and by the time she got home, a migraine took hold. But rest was again elusive; work-related notifications came flooding in, including updates on patients and inquiries from distant areas where she often serves as the sole provider accessible by phone.
Emotional Support at Home
Her sensitive younger brother, feeling the weight of preparing for his board exams—an intense pressure cooker in Pakistan—also sought her support. She comforted him, affirming his worth and ensuring he felt cherished. She quietly observed his unchanged attire and encouraged him to look after himself. Yet again, she placed his needs above her throbbing headache and depleted spirit.
A Touching Moment of Empathy
The day concluded with a heartwarming interaction. A young cancer patient from a remote region, unaware of the gravity of his illness, inquired if he could eat rice. His innocent worries, contrasted with his serious condition, brought a smile to her face. Despite his suffering, what he desired most was reassurance and her presence the following day. His message—”Mem, ap kal aao gy na?” (Will you be on duty tomorrow?)—paired with a heart emoji in response to her “InshaAllah” (God willing), was enough to dissolve the strain of the day.
This simple message reminded her of her reason for enduring such trials.
The Overlooked Struggles
This account reflects just one day in the lives of numerous female physicians. While some juggle young children and household responsibilities, even those without such familial duties carry a significant mental and emotional burden. They contend with anxiety, lack of sleep, medical responsibilities, unrealistic demands from supervisors, and societal pressures to exceed expectations—whether that means achieving more, earning more, marrying, caring for families, remaining “feminine,” or exhibiting no signs of weakness.
Patients anticipate unwavering compassion. Colleagues expect professionalism. Employers demand obedient submission. Families seek excellence. Society, in general, expects it all—without acknowledging the toll it takes.
Calls for Understanding
This candid, introspective look into a female doctor’s day highlights the often-invisible emotional labor endured by women in medicine. They are caregivers, mentors, friends, sisters, and daughters.
