Embracing My Distinct Name: A Physician's Voyage

Born to parents who immigrated, one of whom was not fluent in English, I encountered obstacles in adapting to American culture during my childhood. My mother took care of my siblings and me while my father held numerous jobs. Even though I admired their dedication and sacrifices, I grappled with feeling like an outsider, particularly because of my name, Zoran.

Throughout my upbringing, I faced many jokes and dealt with a variety of nicknames, but a few, such as “Z!” and “Zorn,” struck a chord with me. Eventually, I yearned for an American name to blend in more easily. Despite the difficulties, I preserved a heartfelt gratitude for my parents’ hard work and the opportunities they afforded me.

After many years, I grew to value my name. A former patient named their puppy Zoran in my honor, expressing how much they appreciated the care I had given. This act was the highest compliment I received as a physician and changed my view of my name from a burden to a beloved symbol of my identity and the influence I’ve had on others.
