**Celebrating Heroes at MacKenzie Place – Colorado Springs**
At MacKenzie Place – Colorado Springs, wellness extends beyond mere physical activity to include purpose, gratitude, and connections. Through our PrimeFit Wellness™ initiative, we assist residents in discovering vitality at all stages of life. This autumn, residents Vern Swim, Shirley Swim, and James Butts exemplified this belief by partaking in Honor Flight of Southern Colorado’s Mission 21, joining 55 veterans on an unforgettable expedition to Washington, D.C.
**A Voyage of Honor**
Honor Flight provides fully-funded excursions for veterans to visit national memorials. On October 2, 58 veterans, encompassing 51 from the Vietnam War, six from the Korean War, and one from World War II, set off on a three-day remembrance journey. Among them were Vern, a former Army Chaplain, Shirley, an Army Nurse, and James, a Korean War veteran. Their service highlights the often-overlooked contributions of veterans, especially women in service.
**“Honor in Everything We Did”**
Vern shared his thoughts on the trip, describing it as transformative. He remarked, “Healing took place for vets who have borne silent burdens for years.” For many veterans, including Vern, visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was especially moving. Vern discovered the name of a fallen comrade, remarking, “There were few who didn’t shed some tears.”
During their journey, the veterans explored the World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Vietnam Wall. Among their ranks was an extraordinary 99-year-old World War II veteran, still vibrant and sharp. Throughout, Vern highlighted the theme of honor, stating, “Those who returned from Vietnam received no honor.” The trip provided long-overdue recognition and respect.
Veterans were presented with hats adorned with two meaningful pins: “It’s never too late. Welcome home!” and “Your service. Our Freedom!” Vern pointed out that even these gestures represented honor.
**An Unforgettable Welcome Home**
The journey commenced with an inspiring sendoff. “As we departed, the street was filled with people and American flags applauding us,” Vern stated. With a full police escort and cleared roads, the veterans received the gratitude many lacked after their service.
Upon their return, a touching “Mail Call” awaited, with letters from family, friends, and community members—a beloved tradition that evoked memories of long-awaited wartime letters.
**Living Well Through Purpose and Connection**
MacKenzie Place proudly honors residents like Vern, Shirley, and James, whose journey embodies the PrimeFit Wellness™ philosophy: living with strength, gratitude, and connection. The program encourages residents to engage physically, socially, and emotionally, fostering community and purpose.
Vern encapsulated it: “Each flight is a three-day, all-expense-paid journey, run by a nonprofit and volunteers, funded by donations. I strongly encourage all vets to apply.” Veterans can find more information at honorflightsoco.net.
