**Celebrating Heroes: An Expedition with Veterans from MacKenzie Place**

At MacKenzie Place – Colorado Springs, wellness goes beyond mere physical endeavors, reflecting purpose, appreciation, and unity through the PrimeFit Wellness™ initiative. This belief became evident as residents Vern Swim, Shirley Swim, and James Butts participated in Honor Flight of Southern Colorado’s Mission 21, accompanying 55 veterans on a heartfelt voyage to Washington, D.C.

**An Expedition of Reflection and Commemoration**

Honor Flight offers complimentary trips for veterans to explore national memorials dedicated to their service. On October 2, 58 veterans, which included 51 from the Vietnam War, six from the Korean War, and one from World War II, set out for a three-day experience. Among these individuals were Army veterans Vern and Shirley Swim, alongside Korean War veteran James Butts. Vern dedicated 24 years as an Army Chaplain, while Shirley served as an Army Nurse, highlighting the vital contributions women have made.

**Embracing Honor and Healing**

Vern recounted the journey as the most captivating and emotional experience. He highlighted the deep sense of healing felt at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, sharing the poignant moment of discovering a friend’s name inscribed. The veterans toured memorials and Arlington National Cemetery, bonding with an extraordinary 99-year-old World War II veteran, reflecting on the recognition denied to Vietnam veterans during their service. Each veteran was presented with significant pins, representing honor and welcome.

**A Heartfelt Send-off and Welcoming Homecoming**

As they set off, the veterans were honored by enthusiastic crowds and waving American flags, provided with a full police escort to Denver. Upon their return, a “Mail Call” moved them deeply, rekindling memories of distant deployment days. The veterans felt the recognition they were deprived of years ago.
